My client wants to upgrade DMG Forums from version 2.2 to the latest version. The chap who originally did this installation has left the company, so can anyone help me with how best to do the upgrade process?

Many thanks.

Your options depend on whether you were using version 2.2 out of the box or if it was heavily customized. If it is out of the box, then upgrading shouldn't be too hard.

Technically it is possible to upgrade straight from version 2.2 to version 3.2. What you have to do is get the full download of version 3.2 (not the upgrade version) and you will need to over-write all of the files/directories from the ZIP file to your existing site. Just make sure you don't over-write folders like "images" and "documents" that may have things in them that you uploaded.

Starting with version 3.0, the code switched to ODBC access to the database rather than OleDB, so your web.config file will need to be modified as described in the 3.0 release notes at http://www.dmgforums.com/topics.aspx?ID=142.

If you're worried about upgrading so many versions at once, you can go to the Code Releases section of this site and for each version since 2.2 there are instructions and a specific file to upgrade to the next version. You could do the upgrades one-by-one until you get to 3.2 and the process is not very difficult.

Be sure to backup the existing site and your database before doing any upgrades. Let me know if you have any problems.
