The focus for version 3.1 was to open the source code for the DMG Forums application and to add many new features for the portal administrators. There are a few enhancements and some bug fixes from the user perspective, but most of the improvements will be seen by the administrators. The entire source code is now available with the 3.1 download, giving web site designers and admins full control of their portal's performance. This will allow customizations and will allow the development community to help mold future releases of the application.

Another major enhancement coming with version 3.1 is the inclusion of full MySQL support. Administrators can now choose to run SQL Server, MSDE, SQL Server Express, or MySQL as fully-supported database systems. Along with the inclusion of MySQL came numerous corrections to the way the application handles dates. DMG Forums now relies on the database system to handle all date formatting, therefore the formats should be correct no matter what localization is being used and no matter the data source.

With every release of DMG Forums we are working to provide an all-in-one solution that can either be used as a stand-alone forum application, or a full-scale web site. With the release of version 3.1, we are providing even more customizability for the web designer, adding new features to the application, and creating more options for the tools that are required to run DMG Forums.

Major Enhancements In Version 3.1

  • All source code is available with the application download.
  • MySQL is now a fully supported database option.
  • New format buttons when editing pages makes uploading and formatting easier.
  • Avatars, uploaded images, and photo galleries can now automatically scale to the sizes preferred.
  • Pages can be added to the main menu immediately as they are created.
  • New private messages cleanup tool for admins.
  • Users can now delete old private message threads.
  • Content pages now contain security options for allowing controlled access.
  • The search page is now customizable; allowing topics, members, blogs, and content page searching to be enabled/disabled.
  • Members can now change their own password.
  • Several HTML formatting bugs have been corrected for Mozilla Firefox.

    The web.config file that is shipped with Version 3.1 contains the code displayed below.

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <compilation defaultLanguage="VB" debug="false" />
    <pages validateRequest="false" />

    <add key="DatabaseString" value="Driver={SQL Server};Server=YOUR_SERVER;
    Pwd=YOUR_PASSWORD;" />
    <!-- Comment the SQL connection string and uncomment the two lines below for MySQL -->
    <!-- <add key="DatabaseString" value="DRIVER={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver};
    OPTION=3;" /> -->
    <!-- <add key="DatabaseType" value="MySQL" /> -->
    <add key="DatabasePrefix" value="DMG" />
    <add key="LongDateFormat" value="MMMM d, yyyy" />
    <add key="ShortDateFormat" value="M/d/yyyy" />
    <add key="DateTimeFormat" value="M/d/yyyy h:mm:ss tt" />

    The commented lines are only necessary if you are using MySQL as your database server. You will need to install the MySQL ODBC 3.51 driver on the database server in order for DMG Forums to connect. You will also need to uncomment the "DatabaseType" value in order for the application to know that it is connected to a MySQL database. This value can either remain commented or be changed to "SQL" when using Microsoft SQL Server.
