With version 3.0, DMG Forums is now closer to the web developer than ever before. Our goal for this application from the beginning of development in early 2005 was to provide a web application that would allow entire portal applications to be designed without having to look at source code or the markup files. With DMG Forums 3.0, we have given web site developers even more abilities to design custom web pages by only creating HTML, CSS, and Javascript markup, while leaving the application to do the hard work.

In 3.0, webmasters now have the ability to completely customize the web page layout from our admin console, including information between the <HTML></HTML> tags such as JavaScript or CSS. Also, new features such as the main menu builder or the photo gallery creator give developers the opportunity to create this functionality on their sites with little to no effort.

Beyond the HTML design features, this release is packed with new tools and enhancements to old tools that allow for an endless set of design options without having to customize the core application in any way. E-mail or feedback forms can be created that will automatically send e-mail notices and even post information to your database, which can be read from the admin console. Image rotators can be built within minutes to provide a random photo generator or a banner ad system.

We hope that the many new features that have been made available in version 3.0 will allow DMG Forums to be used directly out of the box to eliminate the hassles for web site developers who are looking for ease of use, but complete scalability. The following list is just a small portion of the major enhancements to this application when moving from 2.x to 3.0.

    The web.config file that is shipped with Version 3.0 contains the code displayed below.
    Code:

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <configuration>
    <system.web>
    <compilation defaultLanguage="VB" debug="false" />
    <pages validateRequest="false" />
    </system.web>

    <appSettings>
    <add key="DatabaseString" value="Driver={SQL Server};Server=YOUR_SERVER;
    Database=YOUR_DATABASE;
    Uid=YOUR_USERNAME;
    Pwd=YOUR_PASSWORD;" />
    <add key="DatabasePrefix" value="DMG" />
    <add key="LongDateFormat" value="MMMM d, yyyy" />
    <add key="ShortDateFormat" value="M/d/yyyy" />
    <add key="DateTimeFormat" value="M/d/yyyy h:mm:ss tt" />
    </appSettings>

    </configuration>

    You must modify the DatabaseString entirely, as DMG Forums 3.0 uses the ODBC engine rather than the previous OleDb use. Copy the DatabaseString value from the new web.config file and re-enter your databse information.

    Three new appSettings values have been created. LongDateFormat is how you would like your long dates to be displayed, ShortDateFormat is for short dates, and DateTimeFormat is for displaying full date-time values. These fields give you the ability to change the formats to those used in other countries.
